Super Science!

One class that I am really enjoying is Earth Science for Elementary Teachers!
I think I'd forgotten how much I just plain LOVE science! :)
One thing we have to do throughout the semester is to design a Bulletin Board with a partner. The sign up sheet started at the other end of the classroom, so my partner, Murphy, and I got stuck with the very last choice- the first week and topics were limited, so we went with Plate Tectonics - both of our second choices! (My first choice was Fossils - which is funny because that is the topic the other group did this week!) There are two bulletin boards per month, and we got the one on the left side of the white board at the front of the room. We decided to set the bar high!  And we are both pretty proud of our board.

It is actually a little hard to design a bulletin board about Plate Tectonics.  The are a pretty 3-D topic. So we got a map of the world and cut it apart according to the Fault Lines and made it an interactive puzzle. I forgot to take "Process" photos of us making the board! Murphy came up with our Title: Tectonic Jigsaw. (I wanted "Whose Fault?" or something equally punny/cheesy) I let him pick because I came up with the puzzle idea. Our board is backed with Felt instead of paper (Felt is on sale at JoAnn Fabrics for $2.99/yard this week!) The puzzle pieces have the hook part of Velcro dots on the back. The word Jigsaw is created from various found objects out of my craft bin. (J- drinking straws, I- craft stick, G-a balloon, S-pom poms (glued to blue paper and cut around for easy stapling), A - 2 long skinny balloons (I tried to make a lowercase balloon A and it popped, so we used that as the cross-bar and cut another in half!), W- soft side Velcro dots.)

What do you think?

Something to take with you!

In playing with the puzzle, Murphy noticed that the Galapagos Islands are on their own plate, as well as the Bermuda Triangle. Interesting!

Here is the other Bulletin Board that was done:

 It is pretty cool.
